WEST LAFAYETTE PUBLIC LIBRARY
West Lafayette, Indiana

Type: New Construction

Size: 60,000 square feet

Completed: October 2004

Using the library’s original site, the new 60,000 square foot building provides the much needed space for their expanding population. Its location in Chauncey Village, adjacent to the campus of Purdue University, creates a heavy amount of pedestrian traffic. An outdoor plaza on the west end of the building encourages pedestrians to gather or experience performing arts.

Introduced on the exterior façade and echoed in the interior spaces are terra cotta tiles uniquely designed in relation to the surrounding streets, all of which were named after tree species. The grand staircase sheltered by a magnificent, dome skylight captures the attention of patrons and entices them to experience the stairs instead of the elevator. Intricate terrazzo patterns and rich wood paneling create warmth to the space. The large 2nd floor reading area ,defined by aluminum composite panels and floor to ceiling glazing, offers spectacular views of downtown. The children’s department includes a thematic castle design and a stage used for various academic and entertaining activities.

A vertical lift and automated book staging system was included in the design to allow public donated material to be moved and staged in a sorting area in the basement without staff intervention. Without sacrificing beauty or function, this building came significantly under budget and allowed the library to construct a full basement and a three deck parking structure.

Interior lighting in the reading areas greet patrons as they approach the library and cause the exterior of the building to glow.

Overhead latticework and the curved ceiling beyond create a sense of openness in this second floor reading room overlooking the main entrance.
Flanked by service desks, the central stair and intricately detailed terrazzo flooring organizes the circulation through the building from the first moment of entry.
Vertical circulation areas are highlighted by finely crafted wood panels at the 1st floor elevator lobby to create cozy seating opportunities.
