High school students design with local Architects and Interior Designers

Madison County high school students show off their designs to friends and parents as a part of  K.R. Montgomery & Associate’s, a local architecture and interior design firm, career explorer program. All year long, students have been learning ‘by doing’ with their very own design project.

As a whole team, students were given a multi-story condo project to design. The teens were challenged to create their own interior architecture and design of one condo unit and at the end of the program, were able to take home a 3-D model of the space.

Students joined, K.R. Montgomery & Associate’s, explorer program to learn from local professionals what careers in the design industry are really like. When asked why they joined, students’ responses ranged from “I like to draw,” “I want to study Architecture,” to “Engineering sounds cool.” Throughout the year, students have been given a well rounded glimpse into these design careers by visiting construction sites, touring new facilities, and working with practicing architects and interior designers. For information on how to get involved with K.R. Montgomery & Associate’s explorer program, please contact Heather Kammer at 765.649.8477.

Library presents KRM with Carnegie Award

Anderson Public Library’s Board of Trustees presented K.R. Montgomery & Associates with the 2007 Andrew Carnegie Award at its May meeting.

The board selected KRM from a list of nominees to receive the award, which is presented to an individual or group, who, in the spirit of Carnegie, has given of themselves and made an outstanding contribution to the improvement of public library services in the community.

“Since the mid-1980s, KRM has worked diligently with Anderson Public Library staff to ensure that the library users of Anderson and Lapel have the best library facilities possible,” Indiana Room Manager Beth Oljace wrote in her nomination. “Their long-term commitment to the library is unusual and laudable. In addition, their service to the Indiana library community at large has been outstanding. For these reasons, I feel they are deserving of the Carnegie Award.”

Mike Montgomery, who thanked the board, said the firm was only 4 years old in 1982 when it accepted the job of designing APL’s building in downtown Anderson. APL was the firm’s first library project. Since then, they have worked with over 30 in Indiana as well as libraries in other states.

High School students explore design careers

Several Madison County high school students and their parents walked passed the festivities of Oktober Fest and into the office of K.R. Montgomery & Associates, a local Architecture & Interior Design firm. There they experienced a night of touching building materials, seeing 3D building animations, and talking to architects, interior designers, construction managers, and a slew of product sales reps. Students chose to sign up for the 9 month Explorer Post where they can learn about the process of design discovering how an idea journeys to become an actual building or space. Each month they’ll be working on their own design project and nine months later they’ll have a finished project that they will present to their parents and even use to build their portfolio. Students won’t only gain knowledge, but actually get to experience things first hand when they visit construction sites and tour Ball State University’s nationally ranked College of Architecture and Planning. The next meeting will be held at K.R. Montgomery & Associates office at 6 pm on Thursday, October 12, 2006.
