HAMILTON EAST PUBLIC LIBRARY
Fishers, Indiana

Type: Expansion and Renovation

Size: 98,000 square feet

Completed: May 2005

The population of Hamilton East Public Library’s service district has increased by 98% in just ten years. This rapid growth left them in need of larger facilities to house additional materials, staff, and services.

The existing building was expanded on both the east and west ends increasing its size from 33,000 to 98,000 square feet. The new space includes specially designed areas just for teens, larger meeting rooms, private study rooms, larger computer labs, classrooms for computer training, significantly larger collection areas, and an expanded Indiana Room. Large, curved curtain walls provide serene views into surrounding woods from each of the reading areas. The children’s department was designed with significant features that help children explore their imaginations. A prominent, central water tower serves as a dramatic focal point and a play destination. The bold, red barn façade welcomes children into the program rooms and provides an opportunity for them to experience a completely different atmosphere.

The design also includes 20,000 square feet of undeveloped space to give the library room for future expansion as their community continues to grow. The estimated completion date is spring 2005.
