ANDERSON UNIVERSITY NICHOLSON LIBRARY Anderson, Indiana
Type: Underground Expansion of University Libraries
Size: 30,000 square feet
This project was the expansion and connection of two University
Libraries on the Anderson University Campus. The Byrd Library and
the Wilson Library both held unique collections and were in need
of additional space. In addition, the client wished to preserve
the natural geography of the area and reduce the impact on the overall
feeling of the University landscape. The solution was to place the
library addition at the basement level of the two buildings allowing
a grade level entrance from the pedestrian court side and minimal
appearance from the street side.
This preserved the Georgian style architecture of both buildings.
The large sky window in the center of the space allows natural light
into the interior space. This facility combines two libraries in
one. It provides additional shelving space, reading areas, compact
book shelving for storage, automated circulation, book security
systems, and a variety of other features.
